  • Across the country, small businesses and consumers alike are getting excited to support their favorite independent businesses on Small Business Saturday, which takes place this year on Saturday, November 30, 2019.  Now more than ever, consumers are recognizing the value of shopping locally and eating at independently-owned restaurants because of the worthiness, quality and uniqueness they add to their community.

Held annually on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express as a response to small business owners’ most pressing need: getting more customers through their doors, rallying communities to support local businesses and helping kick off a successful holiday sales period.

“Small Business Saturday is a wonderful event that promotes community and shopping local.   It encourages neighborhood and community relationships with retail therapy! What could be better?”

     – Karrie Polinsky, Tickled Pink, Downtown Gig Harbor

Grassroots support for Small Business Saturday is largely driven by Neighborhood Champions, a program of advocates for Small Business Saturday.  The Downtown Waterfront Alliance, the Neighborhood Champion for the downtown waterfront, assists the businesses in rallying the community to shop small on Small Business Saturday and all year round.

Each year consumers have made it a tradition to share their Small Business Saturday experiences on social media. This year, consumers and small businesses across the nation are encouraged to show their love for their favorite independent businesses by using the #ShopSmall, #SmallBizSat and #SBSGH hashtags on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

We look forward to seeing you out and about on November 30th and throughout the holiday season, having fun and supporting the local, independent and hard-working businesses of our beautiful Downtown Waterfront! Small Business Saturday and the entire holiday shopping season are great opportunities to take advantage of your Girls Night Out coupons.

  • Honoring Our Heroes

Downtown Waterfront Alliance Veteran’s Banner Project
    – Honoring Gig Harbor’s Heroes –

The Downtown Waterfront Alliance once again sponsoring the Veteran’s Banner Project.  Applications for this unique opportunity to honor those who have served, or are currently serving, are being accepted.  Banner applications will be accepted until August 31 at a cost of $200.00 per banner.  This is not a fundraiser for the Alliance.  Money collected will pay for the production costs and shipping of the banners and any remaining funds will go to support “Race for a Soldier” and the PTSD Foundation.  They will direct those funds appropriately to local veterans and those currently serving.  The Banners will hang in our community from mid-September through late November 2019.  After that time, the banners will be available to the families.

We have space for forty banners in 2019, and they will be approved in the order in which they are received. Pictures in uniform are required in a high quality digital form. If you do not have a digital copy, please bring the picture to the Alliance Office (3311 Harborview Drive, #101) and we will have the photo digitized and return it to you.

The application is available at the Alliance Office (3311 Harborview Drive, Suite 101), at 253-514-0071, or via e-mail at info@ghhwa.org. Applications will also be available at the Information Booth at the Waterfront Farmers Market each Thursday, 1-7, June 6 through August 29, or until all 40 banners are purchased.
